DESCRIPTION:
This exceptional coffee hails from the quaint hamlet of Bookkisa, nestled within the Guji highlands in southern Ethiopia. Guji, characterized by its expansive forests, is one of the twenty zones within Ethiopia's populous Oromia administrative region, home to approximately 30 million inhabitants. The ancestral forests, coupled with the volcanic soil rich in silt and clay, the temperate climate, and the high altitude of Guji, have propelled certain woredas like Uraga, Kercha, and Shakiso to prominence in recent years. However, the true success of this terroir owes itself to the dedication and expertise of the local producers.
This particular batch is the result of the meticulous work of 33 farmers, cultivating their "garden" plantations that seldom exceed 2.5 hectares. On these farms, coffee plants thrive amidst a semi-forest canopy, harmoniously coexisting with other subsistence crops like vegetables and maize. After the coffee cherries reach optimal ripeness, they are carefully handpicked by the farmers.
To preserve the cherries' delicate flavors, they are transported on foot during the nighttime to the nearby washing station located in the kebele (village) of Dambi Uddo. At the washing station, the cherries undergo thorough sorting and meticulous washing processes to eliminate any impurities. This attention to detail ensures the production of exceptional coffee beans with distinct flavor profiles.
